Biography: My work is a merging of opposites. The goal is to break down and dissect dichotomies until I find a similarity, thus negating opposition. I believe at the heart of things one can find similarities of one thing to everything. Nature repeats itself as well as history, and my objective is to discover these similarities. The function of the work is to provide humanity with the visual evidence to generate empathy towards our environment and to demonstrate the necessity of opposites in progressive development.
My primary interest is comparing and contrasting science and religion. The energy of science and the energy of religion are not so different. Fluctuations in the electromagnetic field interfere with brain waves and can cause hallucinations. Hallucinations are also frequently believed to be spiritual visions. The scientific evaluation of the electromagnetic disturbance does not make the “spiritual vision” any less credible to the witness. The experience is still genuine to the “victim” regardless of proof and analysis. My work looks to explore the notion that finding an earthly, logical cause of a phenomenon negates any “spiritual” association or existence, the notion science and religion are contrasting ideas.
I examine this dichotomy not just in thought but in creative method. I explore scientific avenues for visual associations: botany, particle theory, physics, quantum and string theory, pathology, histology, archaeology, chemistry and even micro-biology, but the act of creating is far more spiritual. I use meditative acts such as knitting and sewing to create the work. These repetitive acts put me in a trance like state, allowing my subconscious to function openly, free of “the logical mind.” This juxtaposition of right and left brained materialization creates a dynamic tension in the end product, blurring the lines between the spiritual and the physical.
I use materials connected to my everyday life, creating papier-mâché from shredded junk mail and paper scraps, and plant remnants found in locations possessing a sentimental significance to me. I use purely symbolic materials as well. Free from any direct associations with individual pieces, string, is a reoccurring element in my work. String represents the connection we have with one another and all of existence and the transfer of energy from one form to another. The nature of the energy is evident in the placement of the string; coils and patterns signify meditation, rhythm and tranquility; jumbled messes signify tension, anxiety, and chaos.
My goal is to make work that will be effective in stimulating the viewer’s mind and generating curiosity and a desire for additional examination. This allows the viewer to become one more link in the developmental chain, furthering mankind’s journey to sentience.
